Atlanta United have agreed a deal to sign Velez Sarsfield hot prospect Thiago Almada. This is coming on the back of transfer rumours that the MLS club made an offer for the young attacker.
Almada has been with the Argentine team at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the past weeks and a move to Atlanta United is expected in the coming days after his Argentina team was eliminated at the group stage of the football event. Argentina were in the same group alongside Spain, Egypt and Australia.
The signing of Almada would be a big statement for Atlanta United in the MLS. The transfer will almost certainly lift the mood amongst the Atlanta United supporters. Atlanta United have disappointed their fans with the results posted in the MLS this season. The club sacked manager Gabriel Heinze due to the average results recorded under the Argentine tactician and the disappointing results have continued since he left the club.
The transfer for Almada is far from a forgone conclusion since Atlanta United will need to register him as one of the three slots available for Designated Players. However, the MLS side can add the young Argentine talent to its roster under the new u-22 initiative which started this season. The new rule allows MLS teams to pay big transfer fees for young players. For now, the Atlanta United fans have to wait to find out if they can successfully sign Almada.
