George Bello is a wanted man, the Atlanta United fullback had been on the radar of a lot of clubs. Atlanta United recently announced the transfer of the player to German side Arminia Bielefeld in a deal that would see the MLS team pocket at least $2 million in profits. This marked the first time that a homegrown player from the club would move to a top 5 league.
Bello who was born in Abuja, Nigeria joined the youth set up at Atlanta United when he was just 15 and has since moved up the ladder since that time. He helped the team win the U.S Soccer Development Academy U16 Championship in an impressive showing throughout the tournament. The next season he had an amazing year that saw him bag the 2016/2017 East Conference player of the year.
On the 18th of September 2018, Bello finally made his much-awaited debut for the main team. Though a fullback, he didn’t have to wait for long before scoring his first goal. As he scored under a month later in a 2*1 victory over the New England Revolution. He has turned up for the MLS side 58 times in total while scoring three goals.
He played for the U.S u15 and u17 sides, as he was part of the u17 side for the u17 FIFA World Cup in 2019. He played his first match for the National team against Trinidad and Tobago in January 2021. He was part of the U.S team that won the CONCACAF Gold Cup where he played 65 minutes in the final against Mexico.
While Atlanta could have made more money from the transfer of a player that has made a huge name for himself, the fact that he had just a year left on his contract meant he had to be sold this January. Though they did manage to secure a 25% sell clause with the German club.
